5 Reasons Why We Clutter and How To Stop It

Do you have too much stuff inside your house? Almost every house has some sort of clutter. It could be in an attic, garage, or basement, or it could be hidden by closet doors.

Your junk is known to lurk in these places. And this excessive amount of clutter may be stressing you out even if it's hidden.

Everybody clutters for different reasons. Nevertheless, there are certain common strategies to support you in inspiring yourself to clean up your home.

Here are some of the reasons why we clutter:

Not Sure What is Classified as Clutter

There is occasionally a thin line separating clutter and non-clutter. For instance, something may be valuable yet ultimately useless, turning it into clutter.

Alternatively, you may be holding onto something that was previously helpful in the hope that you'll require it down the road. But the truth is, you no longer need them.

To deal with this, determine if you still find these things useful. If not, throw it away or donate them to avoid clutter piling up.

Not Sure How Long to keep them

While there are things that may be of sentimental value for you such as clothes or gifts given when you were young, you can’t keep them forever.

Take for example worn-out jeans or a T-shirt. If you are no longer wearing them or maybe they no longer fit you, consider tossing them out or donating them to those who may need them.

Buying stuff you don’t need

Another reason why clutter keeps piling up is when you buy things that you don’t need – or “impulse buying”. It is tempting to buy things especially when they are on sale. But if you really don’t need them, better to avoid giving in to the urge.

Not only would it be a waste of money but will eventually contribute to the clutter in your home. Always think about storage and ensure that what you buy is a NEED and not just an impulse.

Change of a Hobby

Learning something new is not a bad thing. But while it's perfectly acceptable to decide later on that your new skill or hobby isn't for you, you don't want to be left with an overwhelming amount of hobby-related stuff like needles, yarn, thread, colored paper, boxes, etc.

Get rid of them early on by donating or giving them away. If you are planning on embarking on a new hobby, make sure that you buy a few stuff first so you can try out first if that new hobby is the right one for you.

You are procrastinating

Putting off organizing and cleaning chores is another common reason for clutter. Lack of motivation or the common belief that you don't have enough time to complete the task at hand can both be contributing factors to procrastination.

It's simple to put off cleaning chores, especially when we have more important things to get done. However, this can easily cause clutter to accumulate in our workspaces and homes.

Don’t procrastinate! Start cleaning by doing it in small batches first and one room at a time.
